K2 Base Camp Trek Itinerary, Day by Day
A standard K2 Base Camp trip takes around 20 days door to door, with about 12 to 14 days of actual trekking. The itinerary below is a realistic template, not a fixed departure: your operator adjusts it for group pace, weather, glacier conditions and rest days. Read it as a shape, not a promise that every day runs exactly as written. Altitude, weather and domestic flights change plans in the Karakoram, which is why buffer days are built in rather than added as an afterthought.
01Getting there: Islamabad to Askole
Most trips start in Islamabad, then fly or drive to Skardu. The flight is about an hour but weather-dependent; the road is longer and scenic, and it is the fallback when flights do not run. From Skardu, a jeep drive reaches Askole, the last village before the glacier, where the trek team, porters and final supplies are organised. One or two days are normally allowed for Skardu and Askole, including a buffer day for a delayed flight, because a missed flight at the start compresses everything that follows if no buffer exists.
- Day 1-2: Islamabad, then Skardu by air or road
- Buffer day in Skardu for weather or flight delay
- Jeep: Skardu to Askole
- Askole: team, porters, final supplies
02On the glacier: Askole to Concordia
From Askole the route follows the Baltoro Glacier through Korophon, Jhola, Paiju, Urdukas and Goro II to Concordia, the great meeting point of glaciers beneath K2, Broad Peak and the Gasherbrums. Trekking days are typically 5 to 8 hours on moraine, rock and ice, with camps on the glacier route. A rest or acclimatisation day is normally placed at Paiju or Urdukas, and the pace slows as altitude rises. Concordia sits around 4,600 to 4,700 metres, so the itinerary must allow the body time to adjust rather than pushing straight through.
- Askole to Korophon, Jhola and Paiju
- Paiju rest or acclimatisation day
- Urdukas and Goro II
- Concordia: K2, Broad Peak and Gasherbrum views
03Base camp day, and the return
From Concordia, a day walk reaches K2 Base Camp, around 5,100 metres, and Broad Peak Base Camp, returning to Concordia the same day, weather and conditions permitting. The return then follows the glacier route back to Askole, usually faster than the way up but still over several days, with a night or two in Skardu before the journey back to Islamabad. A Gondogoro La crossing is a separate, more technical addition: it is not part of a standard K2 Base Camp itinerary and must be booked as such, with its own equipment and experience requirements.
- Concordia to K2 Base Camp and back
- Return: Concordia to Askole over several days
- Skardu night, then Islamabad
- Gondogoro La: separate booking, not standard

FAQs
Can the itinerary be shortened?
Only by cutting rest or buffer days, which is not recommended, or by choosing a different trek. A shorter K2 trip is usually a different product with different risks.
What if a flight is cancelled?
The buffer day absorbs a first delay. Longer delays compress or, in bad cases, shorten the trek itself, which is why the quote should state what happens then.
Is Gondogoro La included?
No, not in a standard K2 Base Camp itinerary. It is a separate, technical crossing and must be booked explicitly.
Planning a trip to northern Pakistan?
Send your dates, group size and the places you want to see. You will receive a written itinerary and quote to consider before anything is confirmed.
