Deosai National Park, above Skardu, is one of the highest plateaus in the world, at around 4,100 m, with rolling grass plains, wildflowers in summer, and wildlife including Himalayan brown bears (sightings are never guaranteed). A Deosai tour from Skardu is normally a full-day 4x4 jeep trip, or an overnight camp trip in season, with stops at Sheosar Lake and viewpoints across the plains. Deosai is a seasonal destination: the high routes are normally open June to September, and closed or limited outside that window by snow.
01What you will see
Sheosar Lake, a high lake on the plains, is the classic stop. The plains themselves — grass, wildflowers in July and August, and wide horizons with no trees — are the experience, rather than a single viewpoint. Wildlife includes marmots, birds, and, with luck and a quiet approach, Himalayan brown bears. No wildlife sighting is promised in any Deosai tour, and any operator promising a bear sighting should not be believed.
- Sheosar Lake
- High plains and wildflowers (July–August)
- Marmots and birds (common)
- Himalayan brown bear (possible, never guaranteed)
02Jeep, timing, and altitude
Deosai needs a 4x4 jeep with a local driver — the plains tracks, river crossings, and altitude are not suitable for ordinary cars. A day trip from Skardu is long (full day, early start). An overnight camp allows a slower pace and a second morning on the plains, but camps are basic and nights are cold even in summer. Altitude is around 4,100 m: walk slowly, drink water, and tell your guide if you feel unwell — altitude affects people differently, and a Deosai day is not the day to push through symptoms.
- Transport: 4x4 jeep + local driver only
- Day trip: full day, early start
- Overnight: basic camp, cold nights
- Altitude: ~4,100 m, walk slowly, report symptoms
