Skardu, Baltistan — Complete Visitor Guide

In short

Skardu is the main town of Baltistan in Gilgit-Baltistan and the gateway to the Karakoram's highest treks, including K2 Base Camp. Most visitors come for a mix of lakes, forts, desert, and high plains, without needing to trek for weeks: Shangrila (Lower Kachura) and Satpara lakes, Shigar Fort, Khaplu Palace, the Katpana cold desert, and the Deosai National Park plains are all reachable as day trips or short tours from Skardu town, with 4x4 transport for the high routes.

01Highlights

Shangrila Resort and Lower Kachura Lake is the classic first stop, with a heart-shaped lake and mountain backdrop. Upper Kachura Lake is quieter and reached by a short walk and jeep track. Satpara Lake, dammed above Skardu town, offers boating and views back over the town and the Indus. Shigar Fort, restored as a heritage hotel and museum, and Khaplu Palace in Khaplu Valley, show Baltistan's royal and architectural history. Katpana (Sarfaranga) cold desert, with dunes beside the Indus, is unlike anywhere else in Pakistan.

02Best time and how to get there

April to October is the main visiting season for Skardu town, lakes and forts. Deosai is normally accessible June to September, when the high plains are open and wildflowers and wildlife are at their best — outside that window, snow closes the high routes. From Islamabad, most international visitors fly to Skardu (about an hour, weather-dependent) or drive the Karakoram Highway and Babusar route, which is longer but scenic. Domestic flights can be cancelled for weather, so keep buffer time in any plan that depends on a flight.

  • Main season: April–October for town, lakes and forts
  • Deosai: June–September
  • By air: Islamabad → Skardu (weather-dependent)
  • By road: Karakoram Highway / Babusar (seasonal, longer)

03Tours from Skardu

A 5-day Skardu highlights tour covers lakes, forts and desert. A 6-day tour adds Deosai. Longer tours add Khaplu in depth, or combine Skardu with Hunza. Private tours use a 4x4 jeep with a local driver for Deosai, Shigar and Khaplu high routes — ordinary cars do not suit those tracks. HelloBaltistan plans and coordinates Skardu tours; hotels, vehicles and guides are supplied by partners named in your written quote, and prices are confirmed in that quote for your dates and group, not published as a fixed total here.

  • 5 days: Skardu highlights (lakes, forts, desert)
  • 6 days: Skardu + Deosai
  • 8–10 days: Skardu + Hunza combined
  • Trek gateway: Skardu → Askole → K2 Base Camp
