The K2 Base Camp trek follows the Baltoro Glacier in Gilgit-Baltistan to Concordia and the foot of K2 (8,611 m), the world's second-highest mountain. It is an expedition-style trek: you walk for many days, sleep in camps on the glacier route, and travel with guides, cooks and porters. Most trekkers start in Islamabad, fly or drive to Skardu, drive to Askole, then trek up the Baltoro and return the same way.
01Route at a glance
From Skardu, the road reaches Askole, the last village before the glacier. The trek then follows the Baltoro Glacier past Paiju, Urdukas, Goro II and Concordia — the meeting point of glaciers beneath K2, Broad Peak and the Gasherbrums. From Concordia, a day walk reaches K2 Base Camp and Broad Peak Base Camp. The return follows the same glacier route, unless your trip adds the Gondogoro La pass, which is a separate, more technical crossing and must be booked as such.
- Start: Islamabad → Skardu → Askole
- Glacier route: Paiju → Urdukas → Goro II → Concordia
- Base camp day: Concordia → K2 Base Camp → Concordia
- Season: June to September for most departures
02Duration, difficulty and fitness
A full K2 Base Camp trip is typically around 20 days door to door, including travel to and from Skardu and about 12–14 days of trekking, depending on the exact itinerary and rest days. Trekking days are long, often 5–8 hours, on glacier moraine, rock and ice at altitude. This trek suits fit, experienced hill-walkers. It is not a first trek for most people. Altitude, weather and glacier conditions can change plans — a good itinerary includes buffer days.
- Fitness: regular hill-walking, stamina for long days, prior multi-day trekking strongly recommended
- Altitude: Concordia is around 4,600–4,700 m; K2 Base Camp is around 5,100 m (check current route notes before travel)
- Not suitable as a first-ever trek for most travellers — see the beginners guide linked below
03Permits, guides and logistics
Trekking in this region involves permits and local logistics that HelloBaltistan arranges as part of a booked trip. Permit rules, fees and required documents change and must be checked against official sources at booking time — this page does not publish a permit fee or rule as a fact. Guides, cooks and high-altitude porters are part of a full-service trek; camping equipment, food and transport from Skardu are normally included in a trek quote, while international flights, visa fees, personal gear and tips are normally excluded — confirm inclusions in your written quote.
- Included in a typical trek quote (confirm in writing): guides, porters, cooks, camps, meals on trek, Skardu logistics
- Normally excluded: international flights, visa, insurance, personal equipment, tips
- Insurance: comprehensive travel + trekking insurance is required by most operators — check your policy covers high-altitude trekking
